Getting Inspired For 2017

Many of us find ourselves saddened, angry, and fearful at the end of 2016.

Some of our most inspiring artists and heroes passed away this year. We’ve witnessed the rise of nationalism, xenophobia, and anti-immigrant sentiment in our country and across the western world. Our hearts were broken and re-broken by terrorism, conflicts, and disturbing images and videos of the Syrian conflict and those who are suffering it’s consequences. Meanwhile, the spread of misinformation, anti-intellectualism, and apathy threaten hard won human rights victories,  freedoms of speech and of the press, and scientific progress, which all threaten this most recent attempt to maintain the fragile human experiment we call representative government and democracy.

However, it is at moments like these we desperately need to be reminded of the progress our species has made!

We need to do this because it reminds us of the fact that, when we stand against oppression together, fight for what’s right together, and work together to make this planet we call home a better place, we humans are amazing! So, if like me, you felt despair, I make this gesture to you:

Hey you! Yeah you! My fellow Homo sapien! Look! Just look at what we have accomplished as a species!

Humans have done some amazing things!

This is the most peaceful time ever in history!

Violence and extreme poverty is at an all time low!

In so many ways, health, human rights, crime, education… we have made huge progress!!!

I don’t mean to say everything is perfect, we still have great challenges.

But, I want to keep doing amazing things. I want to make this planet a better place than it is now. I want to solve the really challenging problems we face. However, I can’t do it without you. So I say,

We did all those amazing things, we can do it again! I’m not pretending these next battles are going to be easy, but I know one thing, we don’t stand a chance of winning if you’re not standing with me on this! So, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, finish that drink, get rid of that fucking apathy, and

I know you’re sad/ angry/ afraid… BUT I GOT YOUR BACK!
